At the invitation of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), the international agency governs and co-ordinates the exchange of mail around the world, the Barbados Postal Service (BPS) is organizing a National Letter-Writing Competition.
PURPOSE
2. The purpose of this competition is to foster a greater appreciation for the art of letter writing amongst young people. Its aim is to develop their composition skills and broaden their creative expression and research capabilities.
3. The winning national submission will be entered in the 53rd International Letter-Writing Competition for young people, to be judged by an international jury compiled by the International Bureau of the UPU, in Berne Switzerland.
PRIZES
4. Trophies will be provided by the BPS for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed winners, while additional prizes are sought from among the private sector and other organizations.
COMPETITION FORMAT
5. The format should be as follows:
5.1 Age Group: The competition is open to participants aged from 9 to 15 years.
5.2 Judging: Local entries are judged by a member(s) of the education fraternity.
5.3 Content: Compositions submitted must be original in the form of a letter (typed) of not more than 800 words and may include illustrations from the candidate.
5.4 Theme: The theme for the 2024 competition is: "At 150 years old, the UPU has served people around the world for more than eight generations. The world has changed enormously since then. Write a letter to future generations about the world you hope they inherit." PUBLICITY 6. Press coverage will be invited for the prize-giving function, which is usually held as a part of our annual World Post Day celebrations, on the 9th of October.
7. The Barbados Postal Service is therefore seeking your support and your school’s participation in this educational exercise.
7.1 Each participant is invited to submit a single entry.
7.2 Each entry must be accompanied by a completed application form.
7.3 The entry and completed application form should be emailed to submissions@bps.bb no later than Friday, April 05th, 2024.
