Deferral of Face-to-Face Classes Scheduled for 24 January 2022

As you are aware, the Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training has been preparing for a phased face-to-face resumption of school on 24 January 2022.

However, based on discussions with the Ministry of Health and Wellness, it is not advisable for schools to open at this time, given the exponential increase in the number of COVID-19 cases; particularly in the under 18 age group. Given the increasing metrics and determinants, the Ministry of Education has been advised that it is safer for students to return after the number of infections has peaked and there is a steady decline in the number of cases over a given period.

The Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training recognizes the importance of face-to-face interaction of vulnerable groups; however, in light of the advice given by the Public Health Officials, a phased face-to-face reopening will occur when it is deemed safe to do so.

It is against this backdrop that the phased reopening of schools for face-to-face or blended classes will not occur on 24 January 2022 as planned due to the COVID-19 situation in our country. The new proposed date for a safe reopening is 21 February 2022.

Please be assured that the Ministry of Education will continue to work with the Ministry of Health and Wellness to ensure the safe resumption of face-to-face classes.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Please stay safe.
