In June 2018 the Government of Barbados articulated a policy that reintroduced the payment of Tuition Fees for Barbadian students pursuing courses of study at UWI, BCC and Erdiston Teachers’ Training College. In return they are required to Give Back a set number of hours in approved community service per year.
The Government’s commitment to pay the tuition fees of students has been viewed as an investment in the human capital of the country and the new GIVE BACK programme is for all persons accessing state sponsorship at tertiary institutions.
This policy is intended to provide a framework to underpin the implementation of the national Give Back programme which is directly associated with Government’s commitment to finance the tertiary education of Barbadian nationals.
The provision of tuition-free education at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels has been the cornerstone of the Barbados social and economic development. It’s generally recognized that Barbados greatest resource is its people and while the government prioritizes investment in the education of it’s people, there is a consequential civic responsibility of each person to country, namely, that those who have derived benefits provided by the state have a responsibility to assist others and pull them along.
The GIVE BACK programme has been envisaged as a national campaign that is wider that education. The aim is to create a national movement for Barbadians to find ways to give back service to their communities and country.
The National Give Back programme aims to instill a sense of responsibility in its citizens to contribute to the development of the country through civic responsibility and volunteer service to communities.
Its goal is to help shape the nation through service and an appreciation and love for country.
